The story is told by Priscilla Eversleigh, daughter of Arabella, narrator of "Lament for a Lost Lover". When Priscilla's father became involved in the fateful Monmouth's Rebellion, the opportunity was given her by the sadistic, lascivious Beau Granville to save her father's life but at great cost to herself. Granville in years to come was to threaten Priscilla's marriage as well as the future of Carlotta, her love-child, who had become one of England's richest heiresses.
