Mariota Macnicol has made a big mistake, returning early from a visit to her father, she finds her lover, Hugh, in bed with another. As she runs down to confront him he suffers a heart attack and dies. The town wench, his lover, laughs in her face, grabs Mariota’s dagger and places it in Hugh and then escapes out a window. Mariota is caught red-handed and thrown into the dungeon, luckily, she escapes with her trusted servant, Nessa and they find an abandoned castle, Cruidrach, and sets out to make it her home. What she doesn’t count on is to have a new Lord of the castle show-up to claim his title.
Kenneth MacKenzie has spent most of his life on the sea, he is used to being alone and certainly doesn’t have room for a wife. His Uncle has given him a gift of one of the families holding a castle in Cuidrach. MacKenzie arrives at the castle only to be greeted by the sight of a beautiful woman. As he gets to know Mariota, he becomes convinced that she is the only one for him. He plans to win her heart, even if it means waging a battle against the men who want her hanged for her crimes.
Until the Knight Comes is a fantastic read with all the elements that make a solid historical romance. Including a Castle, Knight, Damsel in distress, a curse, battles, witches and fairies all combine in a combustible story. Welfonder has added a mystical element that some may not like, but readers that enjoy the mystical powers and beliefs of medieval Scotland will surely find the use of the supernatural intriguing. Also enriching the story are supporting characters, which include a romance between Nessa and the captain of the guard, as well as, some great villains you just love to hate.
Until the Knight Comes has an excellent mix with the main heroes Mariota and Kenneth. The fire burns bright between the two from the moment they set eyes on each other to the final scenes. Welfonder builds a relationship slowly, letting readers get comfortable with our heroes and then allows readers to pull for them to make their relationship work. The payoff is a passionate joining done in the best historical style. Readers are sure to love this historical romance, Until the Knight Comes.
